To all the wonderful mothers in my life. As Paul and I meander our way around beautiful Tuscany, far away from all our responsibilities and family and friends, I think this may be my first Mother’s Day so far from home.
I am grateful for my own grandmothers and my mother, for their sacrifices and nurtured me in my own adulthood.
I think about how motherhood grounded me, gave me an entire additional definition of commitment and creativity, purpose and direction, challenges, joys, and a deepening of my love for little ones, my partner, and this very life I cherish.
To be blessed and fortunate to arrive in the state of grandmotherhood, never a guarantee, and certainly not everyone’s path, affords me another perspective on the entire unfolding and remarkable drama of life. Due to personality, timing, and other distractions, I’m not sure I fully appreciated the miraculous development of each of my own kids, (though apparently, they did development just right,) So watching my granddaughter, with all of her curiosity, perceptiveness, adorable antics, and remarkable capacity to communicate, blows me away every day.
Feeling every blessing of the miracle of motherhood and the parts of me that becoming a mother opened and nourished, even when at times it was crazy busy, unpredictable, and wild.
I am thinking about the Hebrew word rechem or womb from which we have the word rachmanus or compassion. It makes good sense to me that becoming a mother brings out in us the deepest sense of compassion now and forever.
I hope wherever you are and whatever you’re doing today, you are able to take a small moment for yourself to meditate on the miracles of life.
Happy Mother’s Day!
AMY
